Precision. Rhythm. Expression.

Milwaukee Savate Club

A space for exploring the precision, rhythm, and strategy of French kickboxing in a way that feels thoughtful, modern, and human, while still connected to the wider Lyceum training community.

Savate is a French striking art that blends Western boxing hands with precise, agile kicks. It grew out of nineteenth century street fighting and naval traditions before evolving into a refined ring sport with its own rhythm, rules, and culture.

Rather than relying on raw power, Savate rewards timing, accuracy, and intelligent movement. Angles, distance, and posture matter as much as impact. Kicks are placed rather than thrown, which makes the art feel sharp, technical, and surprisingly efficient.

At Milwaukee Savate Club we treat Savate as both a fighting system and a movement practice. Some people explore it as a stand alone art, others as a way to deepen their striking inside a broader spectrum they practice, and some simply as a disciplined and creative way to move and train.

If Savate has been on your radar or you are just curious about French kickboxing, reach out and we will help you find a starting point.

Training is small, focused, and active. Sessions emphasize precise footwork, clean combinations, and the ability to manage distance while staying relaxed. You can expect a mix of shadowboxing, partner drills, pad work, and structured games that keep you moving and thinking the entire time.

Light, technical sparring is introduced progressively and kept under control. Rounds are scaled to the experience and comfort of each participant, with an emphasis on learning, timing, and creativity rather than impact. The goal is to build confidence in exchange while keeping training safe and enjoyable over the long term.

If you are unsure whether this training style fits what you are looking for, send us a message and we will walk through options together.

People come to Savate for different reasons. Some are new to striking and want a structured, intelligent way to learn how to kick and move. Others already train Muay Thai, boxing, or other arts, and use Savate to sharpen their footwork, distance management, and tactical awareness.

Savate fits comfortably inside the larger martial arts world as both a dedicated sport and a source of attributes that carry across systems. Precise kicking lines, efficient ring movement, and clear shot selection all translate well, whether you are interested in competition, self defense, or simply becoming a more complete striker.

It also happens to be a very enjoyable way to train. Sessions are fast paced without being reckless, technically demanding without being overwhelming, and offer a form of conditioning that feels more like practice than punishment. Many people choose Savate as their primary form of fitness training because it keeps both body and mind engaged.

You do not need to be fast, flashy, or fight driven to belong here. If you are curious, willing to learn, and respectful of partners, you will fit. Let us know what you are hoping to explore.

Areas of Focus

Training is organized around key attributes that define Savate and support broader striking development.

Kicking Mechanics & Lines

Work dedicated to the unique kicking mechanics of Savate, including chamber, trajectory, and recovery. Emphasis is placed on using the foot with precision, learning how to create clean lines of attack while maintaining balance and posture.

Footwork & Rhythm

Sessions that focus on movement quality: ring movement, angle changes, rhythm shifts, and control of space. The aim is to help you feel light on your feet, able to enter and exit range smoothly while keeping Savate’s characteristic tempo.

Timing & Distance

Drills and light exchanges that refine your sense of when to move, when to strike, and how far to be. This focus develops the ability to intercept, counter, and flow from defense into offense without forcing exchanges.

Conditioning & Durability

Targeted conditioning for hips, trunk, and shoulders so the body can support frequent kicking and movement. The goal is to build capacity that supports practice over years, not just a single season, and that blends well with other Lyceum training.

Training

At Milwaukee Savate Club we keep the structure clear so the practice can stay technical, playful, and sustainable, while still fitting inside the broader Lyceum framework.

We offer private lessons and small group sessions built around Savate’s tools and the realities of your schedule. Some people come in only for Savate, others cross other arts shared under the Lyceum roof. In all cases the training is adaptive and conversational, built around your goals, your pace, and your experience level.

Sessions follow a simple rhythm: conversation, exploration, then controlled exchange. We begin by clarifying what we are working on, move into targeted drills and pad work, and finish with technical rounds or games where the skills can be applied in motion.

Private Lessons

One on one sessions for individuals who want focused attention on their striking. This can include foundational kicking, footwork, ring craft, preparation for Assaut style competition, or simply building confidence in movement and defense.

Small Groups

Shared training for people who like learning with others while still receiving individual feedback. Small groups work well for training partners or friends who want to build timing and rhythm together in a structured setting.

Open Training

Invite only time blocks for participants who are comfortable exploring combinations, movement, and light sparring with minimal formal instruction. These sessions function as open lab hours and often overlap with other Lyceum practitioners working on their own material.

We recommend training at least once a week. Not as a requirement, but because steady contact with the art is what allows timing, rhythm, and confidence to develop.

If you are unsure which direction fits you best, message us and we will talk through it together.

Training uses a flexible, donation based model with straightforward suggested rates:

  • $70 per private session
  • $150/month for one session each week
  • $200/month for two sessions each week

These are suggested rates, not hard gates. The intention is to keep Milwaukee Savate Club and the Lyceum collective accessible while honoring the time, preparation, and space it takes to run training well.

If you have questions about cost or access, please reach out. We are happy to talk.
